Our members come from across San Diego County, from Oceanside to downtown San Diego. Some joined when they lived nearby and continued coming after they moved. Others visited several Rotary clubs before deciding that this was where they felt at home.
That says something about who we are.
Coastal Encinitas Rotary is not a meeting we attend or an organization that exists apart from us. It is the community we have created with one another—the welcome we extend, the friendships we form, the work we undertake, and the history we share.
When members were asked why they continue to choose this club, their individual answers revealed a collective truth:
“That’s the secret of our club—the people.”
We enjoy being together. We value the familiar faces and warm greetings, but also the unexpected conversations and different ways of seeing the world. We have found friends whose curiosity, experiences, and sense of adventure match—or exceed—our own. As one couple put it, “Seemed like we found our tribe.”
Over time, those connections have deepened. We have watched one another navigate careers, family changes, health challenges, and loss. We have celebrated together and shared enough of life that friendships have become something closer to family.
Those relationships also make our service possible. Working together on needs close to home and far beyond it has strengthened our friendships, and those friendships make us more willing and able to act. “The experience of doing projects together with people you know is a tremendous bonding experience.” The fun gives energy to the service; the service gives greater meaning to the fun.
That is why another club, even a closer one, would not necessarily be the same. A meeting place can change, and a commute can become longer. But the trust, affection, and shared experience built among a particular group of people cannot simply be transferred elsewhere.
We are Coastal Encinitas Rotary.
We are the people who gather around the table, welcome newcomers, and make one another laugh. And when work needs to be done, we are the people who show up and do it together.
There is much here to be proud of—not only what we have accomplished, but how we have accomplished it: together. And there is much to be grateful for—not simply a club to which we belong, but people with whom we belong.
That is what keeps us coming back.
