Coastal Encinitas Rotary Sponsors the American Cancer Society Relay for Life
ENCINITAS, Calif. — Coastal Encinitas Rotary Club (formerly Encinitas Coastal Rotary) made a powerful statement of commitment as the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life, held August 16 in Carlsbad. The event raised approximately $240,000 for ACS’s lifesaving work.
The club’s impact didn’t stop with its sponsorship commitment. The club managed dozens of details that helped create a memorable experience for the approximately 400 participants. Club members, spouses, and friends—more than 32 in all—handled check-in, distributed custom goodie bags for participants, and provided fun touches such as pins, buttons, games, crafts, a photo booth, live music, and, most unusually, five professional magicians. Members also formed two fundraising teams, one of which walked the track for the entire 21 hours. Through its sponsorship commitment, matching funds, and its walking teams, the club raised over $32,000.
Relay for Life was deeply meaningful to the club members, some of whom are cancer survivors, are battling cancer, or have lost members to cancer. “Cancer affects all of us in some way,” said Club President Ralph Hirschmann. “Our club wanted to do more than donate—we wanted to help create an event that would bring the community together and inspire hope.”
Members, especially those who stayed overnight, were profoundly moved by the luminaria ceremony, with hundreds of candles lining the track in honor of survivors and in memory of loved ones lost.
Coastal Encinitas Rotary is always looking for new members. Visitors are welcome at club lunches on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at Cicciotti’s Cardiff. Additional information is available at www.coastalencinitasrotary.org.
